Welcome to the blog Jo! So like all of my interviews we’ll start off by introducing your book! Can you describe I, Zombie in one sentence?

Humans who look like zombies are running away from humans in an apocalypse gone awry!

What inspired you to write a zombie novel from the point of view of the infected?

Well, I read a zombie novel from the pov of the infected and was totally grossed out. Not long after, I was watching a History Channel special on zombies and they mentioned the Kuru virus. So, I went digging (as I often do when I want to know more about a topic), and I discovered it didn’t really turn people into zombies, but gave them zombie-like traits. My writer-ly brain went bananas with the possibilities of it mutating ever so slightly and becoming a pandemic that left people cognizant while their bodies rotted away around them. Then, I added the human element and wondered how people would react to such a thing. I wanted to write a story where the zombies weren’t evil, mindless, brain-eating thugs and make it accessible to those of a younger audience. I, Zombie is good for anyone over age thirteen (there is some gore).

Ah, I’ve heard of that! It’s so eerie, but I like that you took it to the next level! Can you share a quote or sentence from I, Zombie?

“Takes one to know one.” ~ Jack
He’s become a favorite character amongst fans of the novel.
Do you have any writing habits? For example: listening to music, eating certain snacks, etc.
I get up every morning and blog first. Blogging is like a writing warm-up for me. It reminds me of writing rules, gets my creative juice flowing, and gives me time to get coffee in me so I can focus. *grin* I do drink coffee all day long, but it’s only three cups (I’m slow). Any more than that and I’m too wired.
What do you consider to be the best thing about being an author?
That I can be as crazy as I want and it only results in a better end product. Writing is cathartic for me. It lets me get out pent up anxiety, stress, and releases endorphins from the creativity of it all. I’m not sure what I’d do without it.
Do you have any book crushes?
Yes. Genghis Khan from Yassa. He’s so much like my husband.
Genghis Khan? I’ll have to check out Yassa!Any advice for aspiring authors?
Keep writing. No matter what, keep banging the keys. Even if you get that bad review, use it as a piece of advice and WRITE ON!
Favorite books/authors?
I could no sooner choose a favorite star in the heavens.
Okay, I love that line! If you could have a super power, would you? And if so what would you choose?
Heck yeah! The ability to have what I see in my head appear on paper without the need to type/write it out. Now that’s a superpower!

Oh it would be so easy then! I think of stories way faster than I can type them out. That’s brilliant! Favorite writing spot?

Anywhere I can have alone time. I get really focused on the words on the page so I tend to not hear people when they talk to me. It annoys folk, you know?

I definitely understand that. Do you have any hobbies other than writing?

Swimming, horses (when I get the chance), drawing, painting, and other fine creative outlets.

You’re an all around artistic person! Thank you so much for taking the time to answer a few of my questions Jo!

Thanks again for having me, Michelle! It’s an honor.

About Jo Michaels

Jo Michaels

Hi, I’m Jo. Let’s forget all the “Jo Michaels is blah, blah, blah” stuff and just go with it. I’m a voracious reader (often reading more than one book at a time), a writer, a book reviewer, a mom, a wife, and one of the EICs at INDIE Books Gone Wild. I have an almost photographic memory and tend to make people cringe at the number of details I can recall about them and/or their book(s). My imagination follows me around like a conjoined twin and causes me to space out pretty often or laugh out loud randomly in completely inappropriate situations.

I have a degree in graphic design, and my journey to the end was one few students who begin that program ever complete. However, this was one case where my memory and OCD tendencies helped me. Graduation was one of the most amazing days of my life. But, my most amazing day was when my now husband proposed. Every little girl dreams of being Cinderella someday, and he pulled off the proposal of fantasies.

At the risk of sounding cliche, I’m going to let it out there and say how much I absolutely adore the man I’m married to. Along with my children, he’s my whole world.

I’ve lived in Louisiana, Tennessee, and Georgia, but I’ve had my feet in almost every state. Traveling is something I adore, and have plans to someday see the Mongolia I’ve written about in Yassa.

One of my favorite things is hearing from fans! You can find me on social media most any day of the week. Connect! I’d love to hear from you.

About I, Zombie

I_Zombie_Cover_SFW_JoMichaelsIt’s the end of the world as we know it.

Trixie Collins is a normal teen making her way through high school. One night at a party, a boy comes on to her and won’t take no for an answer. As she jerks her arm away, his fingernails cut into her skin.

When she finds her dog’s mutilated body and realizes she’s to blame, she starts to think maybe the zombie apocalypse they’ve been screaming about on the news isn’t a hoax after all. Worse, she begins to think maybe she’s one of the infected.

Now it’s a fight for life as she joins together with her brethren to stop the humans intent on destroying them. Are zombies all bad, or is it just a huge misunderstanding?
