Ah reading goals, the things I come up with then promptly forget about. Thankfully I tend to naturally complete them over time, but it’s not because I’m trying which is both great and incredibly dumb. So this year I plan to be a little bit more on top of my goals and keep track of them throughout the year as opposed to when someone reminds me of them or at the end of the year. So here we go! I’ll explain each one in depth below.
Read at least one nonfiction book a month: I avoided forcing myself to read certain genres (outside of SFF, because that will happen regardless) or themes in this list because TBRs or strict guidelines are the opposite of helpful for me. I instantly rebel at the idea of reading the books, if you don’t believe me…you should watch my update posts during readathons. The amount of switching and substituting I do is almost criminal. So while I’d like to get to more nonfiction centered on race and feminism, I’m simply shooting for more nonfiction in general.
Read more classic SFF novels: I also find that I’ve missed out on a lot of classics in scifi and fantasy because those were never covered in my time in school (seriously, why not swap out one of the numerous Shakespeare modules for something like Foundation?) and now I have to place catch up.
Read more SFF by women/people of color: I also tend to find myself reading more SFF books by guys than women, and while I’ve sort of shifted that already in 2018 I want to do more. In keeping with the theme of diversifying my TBR I also want to add more non-European inspired SFF as well as more SFF with roots in non-white cultures. I adored books like Binti, The Fifth Season, and what I did read of The Poppy War; and they made me realize how used to the western/white perspective I am in SFF. (Side note: if you know any books with biracial main characters let me know! I’d love to see a bit of myself in books)
Read books I already own: This one is fairly self-explanatory. I don’t have as many TBR books as I did at the beginning of last year thanks to my now tri-monthly habit of purging books from my shelves, but I still have a good number that remains unread and I need to change that. Ideally, I’d read them and then get rid of them so I can space for the books I love.
So, what are your 2019 goals? Do you have any book recommendations to help me along with the ones I have listed?
Stranger in a Strange Land is somewhat a sci-fi classic. I wasn’t exactly over the moon with this book, but it kicks off with some very intersting ideas and I’d love to read your opinion on the novel! 🙂
Reblogged this on Site Title and commented:
I set my goal for 48 books on the Goodreads website which should be easy because 47 of them will be single issue comic books…lol. Actually it will be a mixture of a lot of different books I like to read…
These are great reading goals! I can’t help out with book recommendations because I’m also trying to read more classic SFF, but if I find anything particularly interesting, I’ll let you know!
We didn’t even do classics in high school in the Netherlands. I think I had maybe 3 required reading and the rest I could just pick out and pass by my teacher to see if it was okay. So I have a lot of catching up to do with SFF classics as well.
